Annexation and incorporation within Salt Lake County may affect who makes the decisions in your community

Here are a few of the areas that are controlled by the governing entity which may
change due to incorporation or annexation of your community:

  1. Municipal Services (law enforcement, fire protection, animal control, road
maintenance, snow removal, garbage collection, and others)
  2. Taxes and tax rates
  3. Planning and zoning

For residents in the cities, city officials make the decisions regarding services, taxes
and planning. For residents in the unincorporated areas and/or county townships,
Salt Lake County officials (Mayor Peter Corroon and members of the County Council)
make these decisions. A township also has an advisory planning board which makes
recommendations to Salt Lake County officials on planning and zoning matters within
the township.

Annexation: joining an existing city or town and having decisions on services, taxes
and planning, about the annexed area, made by the elected officials in the existing city.
Incorporation: establishing a new city with the citizens determining who will represent
that new city.

Our role is to provide you with information that will allow you to be educated on this issue and convey your desire or municipal governance.
